1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?
4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?

1)       After watching Architecture: The Science of Design, some of the main concepts I learned was that a skyscraper is built using a superstructure (above ground) and a substructure (below ground). These two distinct sections of a skyscraper are essential to ensuring that its foundation can withstand its steel and concrete skeleton as well as the people and objects that occupy the structure. The process of creating a substructure is rigorous and unguaranteed because it requires drilling large concrete or steel piles deep into the ground (up to 200 feet) until it reaches a layer of rock that is strong enough to support the structure. After drilling, architects may find that there’s no suitable layer of rock available for piles. When this occurs, a huge concrete slab is created underground to act as a substructure.  Once the substructure is constructed, the superstructure is relatively easier to build.

Some of the key concepts I learned after watching Transforming the Urban Landscape was that architecture can experiment with just like regular art can. An architect has the ability to use a series of materials, colors, components etc. based on how they’re feeling at the moment. However, unlike art, an architect is limited to certain elements because structures change in use over time.

2)       The videos related perfectly to the reading by comprehending specific details about elements of architecture that the book simply generalized.  They both connect well with each other and reinforce my understanding of the topic.

3)      The films helped with my overall understanding of architecture by giving a behind the scenes look at how architecture serves society other than the obvious reason why. Plus, the videos informed me about the complications that wind gives a structure and how architects systematically design around these issues to avoid disasters.

4)         No real reason why I chose these two films. They were totally at random.
